Ahara (Diet)
Protein Priority: Adequate protein from cooling sources — Moong Dal, milk, Paneer (cottage cheese), and soaked almonds (Badam). Hair is primarily protein, and deficiency accelerates fall.
Iron-Rich Foods: Anar (Pomegranate), Khajoor (dates), Palak (spinach), and green leafy vegetables daily. Iron deficiency is a major contributor to hair thinning.
Avoid: Heating proteins like excessive red meat and eggs, excessive spicy food (Mirchi), sour and fermented items, and alcohol. These directly aggravate Pitta in the blood.
Cooling Foods: Nariyal (Coconut) in all forms — coconut water, fresh coconut, coconut milk in cooking. Coconut is the most Pitta-pacifying food for hair health.
Essential Fats: Ghee, coconut oil, and flaxseed (Alsi). These nourish hair tissue from within and counter Pitta's drying heat.
Aushadhi (Medicine)
Step 1 (Internal): Bhringraj (Eclipta Alba) — 1/2 teaspoon in 1 glass (approximately 200 ml) of warm water twice daily. Bhringraj is the foremost hair-growth herb in Ayurveda, known as "King of Hair" (Keshraj).
Step 2 (For stress-related hair fall): Add Brahmi — 1/2 teaspoon with milk twice daily. Brahmi addresses the stress component that triggers Pitta-type hair loss.
Additionally: Amalaki/Amla (Indian Gooseberry) — 1/2 teaspoon in water at room temperature twice daily. Amla cools internal heat and is the richest natural source of Vitamin C for hair nourishment.
External Use: Bhringraj Taila (Bhringraj Oil) or Nariyal Taila (coconut oil) scalp massage — at least twice weekly. Massage gently for 10–15 minutes before washing.
Duration: Minimum 3 months for visible results. Hair growth is slow — consistency matters more than intensity.
Caution: Sudden, rapid hair loss needs medical evaluation to rule out thyroid issues, hormonal imbalances, or autoimmune conditions.
Kriya (Practices)
Scalp Massage: Weekly warm Nariyal Taila (coconut oil) or Bhringraj Taila massage — ideally at night, wash in the morning. This nourishes roots and improves circulation to follicles.
Hair Wash: Use cool or lukewarm water only — never hot water on the scalp. Hot water aggravates Pitta at the roots. Switch to herbal or mild Shikakai-based shampoos.
Pranayama: Sheetali and Sheetkari Pranayama (cooling breath) — 10 minutes daily. These directly reduce Pitta throughout the body including the scalp.
Avoid: Excessive heat styling, chemical treatments, and tight hairstyles that add mechanical stress to already-weakened roots.
Vihara (Lifestyle)
Sun Protection: Cover your head when outdoors. Direct sun exposure on the scalp aggravates Pitta at hair roots — this is why hair fall often worsens in summer.
Stress Management: Stress is the leading trigger for Pitta-type hair loss. Practice daily meditation, gentle yoga, or any calming activity. Hair cannot regrow in a stressed body.
Chemical Exposure: Minimise chemical treatments — colouring, straightening, perming. Use natural Mehendi (Henna) if colouring is desired.
Sleep: Adequate sleep (7–8 hours) is essential for hair tissue regeneration. Hair growth hormones are most active during deep sleep.
