Why Autumn Brings Heat-Related Problems

During monsoon, Pitta dosha quietly accumulates in the body. When autumn's clear skies and sudden sun exposure arrive, this stored heat erupts — causing acidity, skin rashes, eye irritation, hair fall, and inflammatory conditions. Sharadh Ritucharya is focused entirely on Pitta pacification through cooling foods, calming practices, and avoiding anything that generates more heat.

Daily Morning Essentials

1. Morning Bath Ritual

Take early morning bath with cool water before sunrise. Add a few drops of sandalwood (Chandan) oil or rose water to the bathing water. This removes accumulated Pitta from overnight and prepares the body for the day ahead.

2. Sacred Water Consumption

Drink "moonlight-purified water (Hamsodaka)" — water that has been naturally heated by sun rays during the day and cooled by moon rays at night. This water becomes purified by the Agastya star and should be consumed lukewarm in the morning for optimal Pitta balance.

3. Amla-Madhu Prayoga (Amla-Honey Tonic)

Consume 1 teaspoon of fresh Amla powder mixed with 1 teaspoon of pure honey on empty stomach. Follow with water at room temperature after 15 minutes. This powerful preparation purifies blood and prevents Pitta-related skin and hair disorders. Honey should never be taken with hot or warm water.

4. Cooling Breath Practice

Practice Sheetali and Sheetkari Pranayama for 10–15 minutes. These cooling breathing techniques directly pacify Pitta, reduce body heat, and calm the nervous system for balanced energy throughout the day.

Daily Dietary Essentials

1. Taste strengthnce

Emphasise sweet (Madhura), bitter (Tikta), and astringent (Kashaya) tastes in meals. Include cooling grains like rice, barley, and wheat, and cooling legumes like green gram and red lentil. Examples of astringent foods: sprouts, broccoli, lettuce, peas, cauliflower, potatoes, and legumes.

2. Food Preparation Method

Consume foods at moderate temperature — neither too hot nor ice-cold. Prepare meals with cooling spices like coriander, cumin, and fennel. Avoid excessive heating spices like black pepper and garlic.

3. Hydration Protocol

Drink cooling beverages throughout the day: coriander water, Shatavari juice, tender coconut water, or diluted buttermilk with mint. Avoid ice-cold drinks and limit caffeine.

4. Medicinal Fruits

Include Pitta-pacifying fruits daily: pomegranate, grapes, pear, and apples. Consume between meals or as mid-morning snacks for optimal digestion.

Daily Lifestyle Essentials

1. Heat Protection

Avoid direct sun exposure between 10 AM and 4 PM. When outdoors, wear light-coloured cotton clothing and cover your head. Plan all physical activities for early morning or evening hours only.

2. Mental Cooling Practices

Practice patience and avoid anger-provoking situations. When irritation arises, practice immediate Sheetali Pranayama or apply cool water to face and wrists. Cultivate peaceful environments and gentle communication.

3. Exercise Guidelines

Engage only in gentle to moderate exercise. Avoid strenuous exercise, competitive sports, or activities causing excessive sweating. Swimming, gentle walking, and subtle exercises are ideal.

4. Skin and Hair Protection

Apply cooling oil like coconut oil or sesame oil mixed with sandalwood oil regularly. Use natural, chemical-free cleansers. Protect hair from direct sun and keep skin moisturised with aloe vera or rose water.

Daily Evening Essentials

1. Evening Cleansing Ritual

Take bath with lukewarm water adding sandalwood oil, rose water, or liquorice oil. This removes accumulated heat from the day and prepares the body for restful sleep.

2. Peaceful Evening Activities

Engage in calming activities like gentle reading, soft music, or light conversation. Avoid stimulating entertainment, heated discussions, or intense mental work in evenings.

3. Digestive Settling

Drink fennel water or Dhanya Panchak Kwath 1–2 hours after dinner. This settles digestion and prevents nighttime Pitta disturbances.

4. Sleep Preparation Protocol

Apply small amount of cooling oil such as coconut oil to soles of feet and crown of head. Sleep in well-ventilated, cool room. Avoid electronic devices for 1 hour before sleep to prevent mental heat accumulation.

What to Avoid During Sharadh Ritu

Dietary Restrictions

Avoid sour foods like tamarind, fermented items, and excessive lemon. Minimise salt intake including pickles, salted snacks, and processed foods. Strictly avoid spicy foods, chillies, garlic, and heating spices. Avoid heavy foods like curd, fried items, and excessive ghee. Avoid very hot foods and beverages that increase internal heat.

Lifestyle Restrictions

Strictly avoid daytime sleeping which increases Kapha and disturbs Pitta balance. Never expose yourself to direct midday sun or hot environments. Avoid strenuous exercise, competitive sports, or excessive physical exertion. Avoid anger, arguments, and emotionally heating situations. Limit sexual activity as it can increase Pitta and deplete vigour.

Environmental Cautions

Avoid hot, dry winds and heated indoor environments. Avoid sitting near fire, hot stoves, or heating appliances for extended periods. Protect from dry, harsh winds that can aggravate both Vata and Pitta.
