Acidity & Heartburn
An Ayurvedic Approach

Acidity and heartburn are among the most common signs of elevated Pitta dosha — the energy of fire and heat in your body. Rather than suppressing symptoms, Ayurveda addresses the root cause by cooling Pitta through diet, herbal medicine, practices, and lifestyle changes.

Why Ayurveda Treats Acidity Differently

In Ayurveda, acidity is not just a stomach problem — it's a systemic signal that Pitta dosha has aggravated. The same excess heat that causes heartburn may also manifest as skin rashes, irritability, or eye strain. By cooling Pitta at the root, Ayurveda resolves not just acidity but the broader pattern of heat-related symptoms.

Ahara (Diet)

Immediate Relief: Coconut water (Nariyal Pani) — fresh if possible — throughout the day. This is one of the most effective natural Pitta-cooling beverages.

Avoid Strictly: Tomatoes, citrus fruits, vinegar, spicy food, coffee, and alcohol. These are direct Pitta aggravators.

Cooling Foods: Cucumber (Kheera), melons (Tarbooj, Kharbooja), sweet fruits like grapes (Angoor) and pomegranate (Anar). These naturally pacify Pitta.

Meal Timing: Never skip meals — empty stomach increases acid production. Eat at fixed times daily.

Dinner: Keep it light and finish before 7 PM. Late, heavy dinners are the most common trigger for nighttime acidity.

Aushadhi (Medicine)

Step 1: Avipattikar Churna — 1/4 teaspoon after meals with 1 glass (approximately 200 ml) of water at room temperature. This classical Ayurvedic formulation directly addresses Pitta-type digestive excess.

Step 2 (For severe or persistent cases): Fresh Aloe Vera (Ghritkumari) juice — 2 tablespoons before meals. Ensure it is food-grade. Aloe Vera cools the digestive tract lining.

Soothing: Yashtimadhu (Mulethi/Licorice) powder — 1/4 teaspoon in 1 glass of water at room temperature after meals. Creates a protective coating on the stomach lining.

Duration: 2–3 weeks for initial relief. Continue as maintenance if needed.

Caution: Avoid Yashtimadhu (Mulethi) if you have high blood pressure. Consult a physician if symptoms persist beyond 3 weeks.

Kriya (Practices)

Immediate Relief: Sheetali Pranayama (cooling breath) — 10 rounds. Curl the tongue into a tube, inhale through the mouth, exhale through the nose. This directly reduces internal heat.

Sleeping Position: Sleep on your left side with head slightly elevated. This prevents stomach acid from flowing back into the oesophagus.

After Meals: Remain upright for at least 30 minutes. Never lie down immediately after eating.

Avoid: Forward bends and inversions during active acidity — these increase pressure on the stomach.

Evening: Chandra Namaskar (Moon Salutations) — the cooling counterpart to Surya Namaskar — is ideal for Pitta-type conditions.

Vihara (Lifestyle)

Meal Environment: Eat in a calm setting. Arguments, stress, and heated conversations during meals directly aggravate digestive Pitta.

Eating Speed: Eat at a moderate pace — not rushed. Chew each bite thoroughly. Rushed eating increases air swallowing and acid production.

Avoid: Lying down after meals and late-night eating. Both are primary acidity triggers.

Emotional Management: Anger, frustration, and competitive intensity all aggravate Pitta. Practice patience as a form of digestive health.

Important Notes

If acidity occurs more than twice weekly, consult a doctor to rule out GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease).

Seasonal Connection

Acidity typically worsens during Grishma Ritu (Summer) and Sharadh Ritu (Autumn) when Pitta naturally rises.

Related Conditions

The same dosha imbalance that causes acidity & heartburn often manifests in related ways:

  • Burning sensation in stomach — A deeper manifestation of the same Pitta excess
  • Mouth ulcers — Pitta aggravation often shows in oral mucosa
  • Irritability and anger — Mental Pitta mirrors digestive Pitta
